Here's what you should look for when buying a used quad bike to be sure you’re getting the best machine possible for your hard-earned cash.

1. Ask questions - Making sure the right questions are asked could save you from some serious and unwanted surprises further down the line. If the dealer is trustworthy and stands behind the sale, they won’t mind your inquiries anyway; you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.


2. Inspect it - Examine the frame, shock mounts and other components. If the ATV is pre-owned, check for signs of stress by looking closely for any cracks or bulges that might require welding or parts replacement. Remove the front and rear differential inspection plugs and be alert for any signs of contaminated engine oil or damage to the bearings.


3. Avoid repairs - Be alert to the presence of rust; use a flashlight while looking and feeling for signs of corrosion, especially on the gas tank. If you find signs of oxidation, you can bet that there’s going to be repair expenses, and no one wants that kind of surprise after they’ve gotten their quad bike home.


4. Drive it - Sit on the quad bike and maneuver the handlebars. Make sure there isn’t any wear and tear to the rod irons. Start it up, working the on and off switches to make sure the circuitry is okay. Move all four tyres. Be sure to listen closely to the engine. Turn the headlamps on and have your buddy check these, as well as the taillights and the direction lights. Now give it a spin and see if it’s the ATV for you!
