Opel’s Most Powerful Astra Ever
GM South Africa added Opel’s top performing Astra OPC, only the most powerful production Opel Astra ever produced, to its vehicle range, and then they gave it to me to test drive. This is Opel’s gift to those of you who want a powerful performance car in the small and compact hatch segment. The motor belches out an enthusiastic 206 kilowatts from the two litre engine. Maximum torque was measured, not by me, at 400 Newton metres, now that will puff out your cheeks. This lightening bolt of a passenger car will sprint from standstill to a hundred kilometres per hour in just six quick seconds and they say that the top speed had to be governed at 250 k’s per hour. Talking pure technical performance, the Opel Astra OPC produces 104 kilowatts per litre, which is right up there with the most competitive racing motors. Driving the OPC around the streets of my neighbourhood I realised we need a race track in Durban. This car ran out of road so quickly, the blistering acceleration had me trembling with adrenalin overload in no time at all. Opel reports the fuel consumption to be as low as 8,11 litres per hundred kilometres, but try as I might I could not keep my foot off the accelerator long enough to achieve these figures. For me it was a matter of holding on tight and screeching with delight at the G forces produced by this awesome hatch.
